Paul Matthews, affectionately known as “Barny” in the racing community, has competed in triathlons since he was 11yrs old progressing through the Australian Triathlon Junior ranks. He now lives in Santa Cruz, CA and trains in the mountains.
After doing his time in the Australian triathlon system, Barny moved to long course racing, which suits his style. He raced his first full distance Ironman at the Asia Pacific Ironman Championships in Melbourne, Australia 2012 with a finishing time of 8:05:58. This finish earned him a slot at the 2012 Ironman World Championship race in Kona and his first shot at the big stage. Later that year he went on to finish 2nd at IM Arizona, which confirmed he should be racing this distance.
In 2013 Paul took a break from Ironman racing. In his pursuit to get back into peak Ironman condition he asked the legend, Craig Alexander, if he would coach and mentor him. In early 2014, Paul’s first race back at the Ironman distance and under the guidance of his new coach, he took 2nd in probably the strongest field of athletes outside of Kona, at IM Melbourne. This was a breakthrough performance and has put Paul on the map as someone to watch.Paul by the Numbers
