Professional triathlete Lauren Barnett (USA) overcame formidable competition to win IRONMAN 70.3 Raleigh on Sunday. The Human Interest Group congratulates Barnett for her adding another podium-worthy performance to her growing list of IRONMAN 70.3 victories.
The Human Interest Group also congratulates two-time XTERRA World Champion Lesley Patterson for taking first place at this weekend’s XTERRA Laguna Beach, her second off-road victory this year.
“Awesome job by Lauren in Raleigh! Claiming the top spot plus the fastest bike and run against 70.3 veteran Meredith Kessler is undeniably impressive. Lauren’s bike strength is becoming a real weapon on the course,” said the Human Interest Group Director Michael Cardoza. “Taking the podium at the 70.3 world championship is Lauren’s goal this year, and I’d say she is well on her way.”
“And big congrats to Lesley too. The Scottish Rocket not only came in first among women at XTERRA Laguna Beach, she beat the guys! Lesley is building a strong base for the year that will serve her well at the world championships in Maui.”
Barnett exited the swim four minutes behind last year’s Raleigh victor Meredith Kessler and wiped out much of the gap with a crushing performance on the bike leg. Barnett clocked 2:21:19 on her bike, the fastest bike split among the pro women. Off the bike and only a couple of minutes from lead position, Barnett stayed in close pursuit of and powered past Kessler near the end of the run. Her performance-winning run was also the fastest run split of the day at 1:25:02. Barnett crossed the IRONMAN 70.3 Raleigh finish line at 4:21:04, nearly two minutes ahead of Kessler.
“Ironman 70.3 Raleigh was a true test of mental fortitude that left no room for error. I had to focus on embracing the battle and giving my very best each second, each stroke, every minute, mile, and moment,” Barnett said about the challenging course. “Confidence and courage were my strengths on a hot and humid day that turned out to be a most memorable one for me!”
Since joining the professional circuit in 2013 after an undefeated season as an elite amateur, Barnett is building a reputation as a biking powerhouse that puts her on the podium wherever she races. Barnett will continue to prepare for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship this September; last year, she finished as the 2nd American and 9th overall among a highly competitive pro field. A proud Midwest native, Barnett lives and trains in Kansas City, Kansas.
