Strong Racing in Ecuador and Mexico: Weekend Wrap-Up

The Human Interest Group/Professional Triathlon congratulates Tim Don and Mauricio Mendez for podium finishes in Latin America this weekend that propel them closer to 2015 world championships.

Don placed first in the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Ecuador with a time of 3:51:34, and Mendez took third place in the XTERRA Mexico Championship with 2:21:33.

“It was a well-deserved victory by Don, and his lead during the race indicates his preparation for the 70.3 World Championship is going really well,” said Michael Cardoza of Human Interest Group. “Mau is performing like a champion too. He was just a few paces behind two regional champs, and the swim and run were especially strong.”

In a race when an on-course dog was the only thing nipping at his heels, Don crossed the finish line in Manta, Ecuador almost fifteen minutes ahead of his closest competitor and took first in the bike (2:07:37) and run (1:16:34) splits. The win for Don comes after a month-long training camp in Boulder, Colorado as part of Team Bravo, and Don next travels to Austria at the end of August to podium once again at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

Facing current XTERRA East and West champions, Mendez demonstrated his increasing power by moving through a competitive pack, ultimately claiming the fastest run for the day in Tapalpa, Mexico. Mendez expects to race against several of those same competitors at the XTERRA World Championships this November. Mendez has been mixing it up this year, racing 70.3/half distance as well as XTERRA, which he will continue to do so throughout the remainder of the year but with a strong push for XTERRA World Champs.
